I will start this one with the preface that I am not a qualified canine nutritionist. However, feeding chicken and rice still seems to be such a common practice for dog owners facing upset stomach issues and it needs to stop!

Here are the reasons rice is not good for your sick dog:

1 – it’s a grain, which is naturally inflammatory. It is not easy for dogs to digest at the best of times, never mind when they’re unwell.

2 – it has a high glycemic index, meaning it causes spikes in blood glucose.

3 – it holds little to no nutritional value at a time when our dogs need nutrition the most.

Here are some better options to feed instead:

Canned pumpkin – not a grain, rich in fibre, excellent source of potassium.

Cooked or mashed sweet potato (no skins) – rich in vitamins and fibre.

Bone broth – hydrating and highly nutritious.

Plain yohgurt (free of sweeteners) – good probiotic and source of calcium and protein.
