Make sure you’re not making this mistake…

The main mistake I see new rescue adopters making that holds their dog back is pushing the dog too far, too fast. Even a fairly confident dog will struggle when their environment and routine suddenly changes and they are surrounded by strangers. We may love them from the moment they arrive, but they do not know or trust us and don’t know they are home. Pushing to do too may things too fast is confusing and overwhelming for most rescues and won’t set them up for success. So don’t worry about getting out on walks or introducing them to dogs belonging to friends and family. Instead, keep their world small to begin with so they get familiar with the place and people they need to know best. In the first few days and weeks, it is crucial to start building a bond between that dog and core members of the household so the dog learns to relax and trust. You’ve got the rest of your dog’s life to go on adventures and live your best life together – having patience in the beginning goes a long way.
